Every single product that we make has come from years of research, testing and development before it goes anywhere near production. The process goes something like this:
1. Research & development
The first stage of any product development process is to make sure we have properly researched what we aim to bring to market.
We do our homework, market research, explore latest trends with our food technologists and nutritionists and put together a brief for the type of products and ingredients we want to source and create. In the case of Bodyhero we already had a good idea where the gap we saw was.
2. Ingredient sourcing
Working with our food technologists and extended family of premium ingredient suppliers from around the world, we source a wide range of relevant ingredients that match our exacting plant based, free from and allergen free standards, and which all serve a functional purpose in our recipes.
3. Recipe development
This is where the magic happens! There is a fine art to achieving the right blend of quality ingredients that provide the optimal nutritional profile, functionality, taste and mouthfeel. We can typically go through around 20-30 trial recipes before landing on final samples. We work with experienced Food Technologists who are armed with MSc in Food Science and Engineering qualifications, and Registered Nutritionists to make sure we create the all-round best products possible.
4. Product testing
This is where we test our products on a range of people to get their feedback on the quality, flavour, texture, and overall experience of using our products. We emulate the actual production process in smaller pilot batches in order to test how the products will likely perform through the full manufacturing process.
We then tweak as necessary and test again (and again) until we know we have something special that everyone agrees on!
5. Independent testing & accreditation
This is one of the most critical and costly steps in the process, but one that we feel is absolutely fundamental to the integrity of our products, and despite all of our ingredients already having been through rigorous checks at the manufacturing stage, we go one step further to have new products independently tested. We send our products to independent laboratories to complete a range of quality tests.
Only once the results are in and we’re satisfied with the results do we progress to production. If the products don’t meet our exacting standards, we go back to the drawing board until we get it right.
6. Packaging design & accreditations
Once we have a final recipe, it’s time to bring it to life with packaging. Working with our highly experienced in-house creative team we aim to design packaging that is both elegant and informative. Before we produce the packaging, we also go through a rigorous accreditation process with both the Vegan Society and Informed Sport to ensure that each and every one of the ingredients used in our products meet their exacting standards for animal free products and zero banned substances. Only once this is complete can their logos be applied to our packaging – to provide you with absolute certainty that what you expect from the outside is what you get on the inside.
We go one step further by also gaining accreditation for our products that they are Made in Britain. Through validation of our supply chain, Made In Britain give you the assurance, via the Made in Britain logo on our packaging, that we produce all of our products in Britain.
7. Production & certification
We’re almost there! Our production teams get busy scaling up to production volume levels, blending our products and filling / packaging them into our shiny new packaging!
But we don’t stop there! Once we have finally produced the finished products, we send a batch of every production run thereafter to Informed Sport in order for them to batch test each and every production batch for banned substances. Whilst this delays us launching by a further week or two – we think it’s worth it to have the most comprehensively tested products on the market. We also get our products third party independently tested for heavy metals to ensure our products fall within the EU reference range limits.
Finally, you’ll then be the first to hear that the product is coming to market!
